Cruising the Mississippi River

Let’s skip the American Revolution (we all know what happened anyway), because the Civil War is when it really got down and dirty. With the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Crown Cruise Vacations presents the Epic Civil War Journey Voyage. All you history buffs are going to love this experience. And for those that fell asleep in American History, learning about the Civil War is as effortless as sipping a margarita by the pool.

For twelve nights beginning August 9, you’ll be onboard the American Queen steamboat, whose Victorian charm turns heads as she glides down the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers. Think lacy filigree, antiques, and lots of grandeur. The boat has all the amenities for a relaxing cruise vacation: poolside lounging, varied dining options, complimentary drinks, nightly dancing to swing and band music and comfort overall that doesn’t disappoint.

And here’s where you can freshen up on your Civil War history, because watching Gangs of New York just wasn’t enough. The boat stops in the historically rich ports where famous battlegrounds and time-changing events took place. Additionally, you can watch the premier of the new documentary about PBS’S longest running and most watched history series, The American Experience. The documentary, “This Republic of Suffering,” is based on the bestseller by historian and Harvard University president, Drew Gilpin. It examines how the unprecedented death toll of the Civil War challenged the shaping of American culture and policies.

Additionally, producer and filmmaker Mark Samels and Ric Burns will be onboard to share inside knowledge of the production. No, it’s not a ghost you’re seeing if you spot Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee roaming around the top deck, but tribute artists Barry Meadows and Al Stone.
