Verlaine, Lower East Side, NYC

Verlaine Lounge

Strategically located on notoriously lively Rivington Street, Verlaine is what I’d call a diamond in the rough. Surrounded by fashion boutiques by day and nightclubs by night, the Lower East Side destination is a prime party spot for adventurous New Yorkers. Particularly recognized for legendary music venues and a laid-back lifestyle, this historic neighborhood in downtown Manhattan is a bit on the gritty side but still lures both residents and curious tourists alike.

Verlaine Lounge NYC

While most Lower East Side hipsters stick to the well-trodden Ludlow Street, this Southeast Asian inspired bar and restaurant is a bit off the beaten path. Perched on the corner of Rivington and Essex Streets, Verlaine is a blend of uptown elegance and downtown edge. Often filled to capacity on any given night, the hotspot is ideal for romantic dinner dates, casual business meetings and of course, happy hour. While still on the cusp of recognition, it continues to be a favorite among locals, the main appeal being the $5.00 happy hour deals on weekdays. In the city that never sleeps, finding quality cocktails for dirt-cheap is easier said than done. Verlaine goes one up and tricks your mind into believing you are at a five star establishment.

Design-wise the restaurant makes the most of a relatively small space with a sleek, minimalist interior that draws attention to the very high 17-foot ceilings. Moody lighting and a range of music from jazz and soul to classic rock create a cozy atmosphere. Much of the seating options are small café style two-top tables, supplemented by seating in the bar and comfortable lounge seating near the entrance.

Extending the happy hour deal until 10pm daily, Verlaine serves their signature cocktail – the Hanoi Lychee Martini – endlessly, and boy are we happy about that. A simple and strong recipe, consisting of perfect consistencies of vodka, lychee juice and a splash of pineapple, this is a lively and flavorful drink that rarely disappoints.  Have a few without worrying about the tab. While it remains the crowd favorite, there are other noteworthy choices offered during the coveted happy hour like the Vietnamese Bloody Mary, delicately blended with vodka, muddled ginger, tomato, coriander, horseradish, limes and chili paste. Their fresh-made Sangria with loquat and rambutan syrup is also a crowd pleaser.

Another creative element adding to Verlaine’s universal appeal is their rotating wall displays. Every month, the restaurant features the work of local artists, photographers and poets. After all, Verlaine is named after Paul Verlaine, the 19th Century French poet and readings are held on a recurring basis and definitely cater to the young and artistic local community.
