LA Theatre Goers Get Star Treatment

Planning a visit to the city of the stars? Although visitors to LA are never guaranteed celebrity sightings, the winter season brings a variety of “A Listers” to Los Angeles area theaters.

Through January 16, 2011, Tony®, Emmy® and Golden Globe® winner and TV icon Dick Van Dyke will be performing a new autobiographical musical titled Dick Van Dyke–Step in Time!–A Musical Memoir at the intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse. The show, features stories and songs from the actor’s long career on stage and screen, is co-written by Van Dyke and director Joshua Ravetch.www.geffenplayhouse.com

Across town in a limited 6 week engagement beginning in January, another Tony®, Emmy® and Golden Globe® winner and TV favorite John Lithgow opens the 2011 Mark Taper Forum season with his solo show Stories by Heart. The play traces his roots as a performer and storyteller, with stories by P.G. Wodehouse and Ring Lardner as well as anecdotes from Lithgow’s own life. www.centertheatregroup.org

January closes with the opening of 33 Variations on the Ahmanson Stage, also in a limited run through March 6, starring Academy Award ®winner Jane Fonda reprising her critically acclaimed Broadway role. While on Broadway, the play received five Tony ® nominations, including “Best Play” and “Best Lead Actress in a Play,” for Fonda playing a terminally ill musicologist researching the last four years of Beethoven’s life and work.
