The Winter Haven, Miami Beach

Winter Haven Exterior Daytime

Like much of South Beach, The Winter Haven Hotel is a hot party scene with an exclusive lobby bar serving elegant cocktails to its guests and their friends, some in risqué beach attire.  But it’s not flashy, however, like its trendsetting neighbors and possesses a sort of understated elegance that commands your immediate attention, a place where neon and nautical come together in an embrace of the Streamline Modern design aesthetic.  This ultra-modern style combined the traditional sharp angles of Art Deco with an aerodynamic concept of motion and speed.  Think smooth, sleek and sexy. It’s a serene and lovely setting, hugging the bustling strip of Ocean Drive that fronts Lummis Park, its stunning white sand dunes and long expanse of beach. The hotel’s facade stands out visually and its dynamic interior makes you truly appreciate the Tropical Deco architecture of South Beach.

The property’s signature double-height lobby with soft corners everywhere is decorated with curving railings adorned with lucite balls. Let’s just say it resonates like a 1930’s cruise ship and you half expect Fred and Ginger to dance down the curving staircase onto the terrazzo floors at any minute. It functions as a place to indulge your own ultimate ocean fantasy while remaining on dry land.  Relax out of the hot sun and be transported to a new “Decosphere” in one of the bold snakeskin covered high back chairs or quilted velvet sectionals, all buffered by  a palette of green and gold softened with neutrals.

Winter Haven Lobby Seating

The historic property unveiled in 1939 and it exudes a soothing deja-vu energy as soon as you enter. Staying true to its cruise motif, rooms are compact yet glamorous.  Restrained neutral tones dominate the 71 Deco-inspired guest rooms, a saving grace once inside from the intense Miami sun. You’ll find it easy to recharge for the evening’s festivities.  But guests wanting a little solace away from the energetic scene outside can take refuge up on the 1,600 square foot rooftop terrace with panoramic ocean views, and outfitted in teak with dark rattan seating.

Winter Haven King Ocean

A stay here should definitely include dinner at il Bolognese, the chic Italian restaurant located in a corner of the lobby.  Riffs on classic dishes like Buffalo Mozzarella Caprese, Spaghetti Carbonara,  Pappardelle Pomodoro and Ravioli al Funghi will please palates enamored of all things Italian when it comes to cuisine. A distinguished wine list further enhances the experience. If you’re not feeling up to a full meal just head over to the Martini Bar and savor some oysters while sipping a classic cocktail.

Still not satisfied? Get your fix shopping on Lincoln Road, sign-up for a sight seeing excursion, rent a bicycle for a few hours, or grab a towel and head for the gorgeous beach. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and provides exceptional advice on whatever ideas you may have … and you’ll have many.  Or perhaps you’ll just want a little coddling in the cozy confines of your room, away from the madness and left alone to dream.
