The Somerset, Turks & Caicos

Admittedly I’m a novice when it comes to over the top luxury in the Caribbean, so it’s fair to say that I could be easily impressed, but when The Somerset’s jovial bellman (a Reggaeton singer on the side) dropped me at reception, I was just about speechless.  And I hadn’t even seen the view.Beach

The Somerset, a quasi-luxury hotel and private residence for an elite few, is considered one of the premiere properties in the Turks & Caicos, a set of islands where upscale hotels are a dime a dozen.  Tellingly, there aren’t any chain hotels in the Turks & Caicos, except a mega all-inclusive Beaches resort and an outdated Club Med.  The hotel is located on the world famous 12 mile stretch of Grace Bay Beach on the island of Providenciales (aka ‘Provo’) and a world away from, well, the rest of the world. It boasts 53 one to five bedroom villas, ranging in size from 1,400 to 5,300 square feet, each privately owned and available to rent on a short term basis.  The two-story, five bedroom penthouse with in-suite baths and a Jacuzzi on the terrace was the pad of choice when I was there for a few unnamed celebrities and The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Besides the grand accommodations, what makes The Somerset memorable is its unabashedly formal architecture and lavish interior décor. Figuratively, it’s Palm Beach meets the English countryside in the Caribbean.  Marble floors, Bose surround sound and Viking kitchen appliances are all standard in the villas.   The individual owners can tailor the furnishings to their liking but the general theme is far from modest and would make even the most discerning guest quite comfortable.  Details including Molten Brown amenities, iPod docking stations and twice daily maid service allowing those not accustomed to ‘roughing it,’ to feel right at ease.

Now, let’s get back to that gorgeous view.  Situated on an intimate five acre plot of prime seaside real estate, The Somerset’s best-selling asset is its idyllic view of the turquoise Atlantic waters that appear to expand into the horizon.  The waters of Grace Bay evoke shimmering diamond gems and are just as breathtaking in the moonlight as in the sunlight.  In fact, all of the property’s social gatherings revolve around the vista, from a weekly cocktail reception to a beachside BBQ party and, upon request, a private gourmet dinner right on the sand.

pool & beach

The main residences surround a 138 foot reverse current lap pool, the longest in the Turks & Caicos, and an infinity pool, both overlooking the private beach. Guests can enjoy lunch poolside or beachside (try the local Caribbean conch and lobster) and spend the day snorkeling, sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding (all included in the rate) or just lounging.  There is also O’Soleil, a fine dining establishment with crystal chandeliers and the longest bar in the world inlaid with real Mother of Pearl. The chefs offer a menu of fresh, local cuisine in a well-appointed setting that could easily be mistaken for a Madison Avenue restaurant. The Somerset is kid friendly too with the complimentary Caicos Kids Club featuring daily activities such as sand castle building, treasure hunts, and bonfire and movie nights.

What’s more, in true British style, there’s even a regulation croquet lawn on the premises.  Rumor has it Gucci’s global events planner hosted her wedding there.  Cheerio!

We mustn’t forget though … in the end, this is still the Caribbean. Bring the hangover remedies for endless rum punches!
