SHERATON BUCKS COUNTY HOTEL

Sheraton Bucks County Lobby

Some interesting rock formations in a kind of pink quartz guide the way toward the spartan entrance to the Sheraton Bucks County Hotel and the driveway winds its way under a large porte cochere that can easily harbor 2 vehicles.  Located in one of the main business districts of Bucks County, an area known for its gentility but where strip malls are the norm, the Sheraton Bucks County stands out almost as the epicenter, a place where the local gentry meet, relax and perhaps do business, too. But even for a businessman working in the area, there’s an immediate sense of comfort and class when checking in here.  The lobby opens onto a large sitting area furnished with leather chesterfields, suede and mohair club chairs and a huge red Oriental carpet.  Simple spool lamps with linen shades subtly edged in black ribbon perch on round glass topped mid-century end tables and a massive fieldstone hearth harbors a roaring fire which immediately warms the welcoming space.  The central space is softly lit by a massive arts and crafts style steel chandelier.  Yes, you might want to spend some time here and as there is no Muzak you just might; a classical symphony accompanies your check-in and the desk staff is as courteous and friendly as you would expect in the country.  Bucks County is famous for its hospitality and this Sheraton property has acknowledged that.  Don’t be surprised by the way if one of the staff mentions that he wants all the guests to be happy.  This is the mantra here and it’s working!

With the numerous colleges in the Philadelphia area, the hotel has borrowed an unusual theme of the university as its leitmotif and the floors and public spaces have been carefully planned around it. Think dark woods, deep colors, stripes, houndstooth and lots of Ralph Lauren plaid. The reference works thematically lending a feeling throughout of a college square.  The University Grill, the hotel’s fine dining establishment, beckons for a peek as one heads for the elevators.  The large cocktail lounge adjacent to a series of dining rooms looks cozy enough to hang with a friend over endless martinis.  Cushy slipper chairs in a preppy English check hug low to the ground captains tables while more moderne pendants and sconces add a touch of sophistication.  With a large central granite topped refectory table, the effect is kind of like being invited to an alumni dinner in the formal dining hall.  Two toned solid, dark drapery in black and cranberry surrounds the masculine space and it’s clear that the Starwood folks have decided that scholarliness is the path to an upscale reworking of the Sheraton brand.

The Squire always says to upgrade to the club floor whenever possible and here it’s especially comforting.  Round the clock access to a comfort zone that’s perfect for both working and relaxing can make or break your stay and in that respect the hotel really delivers.  Starbuck’s coffee and continental breakfast are complimentary and snacks and drinks throughout the day are welcomed when you’re trying to make your deadline.  Once you’re satisfied with your progress you’ll definitely want to retreat to the indoor heated pool and Jacuzzi, housed in a beautiful chalet style extension.  This is of course after a vigorous workout in the enormous gym followed by a few minutes in the dry sauna.  Who knows, you may be up for more work after your down time.
