Jean Paul Gaultier Brings French Flair to Dallas

Forget high hair and shoulders (well, maybe keep the shoulders) … Jean Paul Gaultier has arrived in Dallas. For all you Texans, you know you’ll want to tell your friends in New York and L.A. that you’ve seen one of the most talked about fashion expositions since the Alexander McQueen installation at NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. French haute couture designer, Jean Paul Gaultier’s new exhibit, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, is now at the Dallas Museum of Art until February 13, 2012.

As an FYI for all the non-fashionistas, Gaultier is known for his unconventional and outrageous approach to fashion design. He hit it big with his designs for Madonna (the notorious cone bra) for her Blond Ambition tour and has also designed tour costumes for the likes of Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue.

Each item on exhibit is drawn from an inspiration in Gaultier’s life—“dance, pop-rock, cinema, television, photography and world cultures.” What is particularly interesting about the presentation is that the outfits are hung on mannequins that have moving facial expressions like eyes that blink or talking lips.

This exhibition, which wrapped at Montréal’s Museum of Fine Arts in early October, has already created a buzz in Dallas. It’s a departure for this town, not known as a fashionista’s paradise, but it seems it’s also important to the designer himself as it’s his first visit there. The word is he found the city and the people to be quite “elegant.”

To celebrate the expo and all the trendy visitors that will be lured to Dallas, the swanky downtown Joule Hotel has created an exclusive Jean Paul Gaultier package for their guests in partnership with the Dallas Museum of Art. The package includes:

  • Deluxe King accommodations for two
  • 2 tickets to the Jean Paul Gaultier ‘Sidewalk to the Catwalk’ exhibit
