Palacio Duhau, Park Hyatt Buenos Aires

For the last four years a new entrant in Buenos Aires’ hotel market, Park Hyatt’s Palacio Duhau, has helped set the standard for luxury accommodations in Argentina’s capital city. Located in the fashionable Recoleta shopping and residential district, the Palacio is a fusion of a Belle Epoque palace and a modern, sleek, international hotel. The hotel is beautiful, well put together and the service is always exceptional.

The Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt actually consists of two separate structures – the Palace on Alvear Avenue which was originally built in 1934 by the French architect Leon Dourge for the Duhau family and a 17 story modern tower on Posadas Avenue. The two structures, which conveniently have their own lobbies and check-in desks, are connected by means of a picturesque internal garden as well as an underground passage where guests can find the hotel’s art gallery, flower shop, business center and elegant spa, gym and swimming pool. The hotel’s Ahin Wellness Spa is a particular treat where guests can start a day with a vigorous workout or recover from the day’s turmoil with a refreshing swim or luxurious massage.

The Palace is a particular treat. As the story goes when the last Duhau sibling left in the mid 1970’s the structure became empty and fell into disrepair. Acquired by Hyatt Hotels in 2002 in a partnership with a local developer, the structure has been painstakingly restored to its former grandeur. Filled with dark woods, red marble floors, sturdy ironwork and crystal chandeliers, many of the family’s favorite rooms have taken on new functions which can now be enjoyed by guests. Particularly beautiful is the Oak Bar which was once the family study and is now the perfect place to have a drink and the Vinoteca which now houses the hotel’s 3500 bottle wine collection as well as some of the country’s best cheeses.

The Palace houses 11 rooms and 12 suites while the Tower houses 115 rooms and 27 suites. The rooms in the Tower were equally beautiful and very large but I loved the sense of quiet elegance and history that resonated from the older structure.

The hotel contains two restaurants, the Oak Bar and an intimate tea room. A lovely place to enjoy a cool drink, an evening meal or the hotel’s hearty breakfast is on the patio overlooking the terraced garden.
