Helsinki Festival 2012

What began as a series of classical music concerts in the 1950’s has transformed into a midsummer romp in the heart of Finland that includes contemporary pop and world music, dance, theatre, cinema and exhibitions. From August 17th to September 2nd, feed yourself the arts at the 24th annual Helsinki Festival.

One of many worldwide “White Nights” events, the Helsinki Festival celebrates the long days and nearly nonexistent nights at high latitudes during the summer solstice. Thanks to the gratuitous sunlight hours, street performances persevere into the wee hours of the morning and galleries keep their doors open until midnight.

The festival culminates at Night of the Arts, an entirely free series of events that only exaggerates the irrefutable coolness of the Finns. From museums to bookshops to the great outdoors, Night of the Arts immerses the capital city in a shroud of imagination, innovation and the avant-garde. Last year, one workshop invited guests to create their own foam animals and participate in a parade featuring their creations.

Alternatively known as “Night of the Bottles”, the celebration is a favorite of eager drinkers, but programs are designed for visitors of all ages. This year’s Night of the Arts will take place at the peak of the two-weeklong festival on August 23rd.
