Montauk Yacht Club

Built in 1929 by famed entrepreneur Carl Fisher, The Montauk Yacht Club Resort and Marina is a hidden gem at the eastern end of Long Island. The entire property has a fitting nautical theme, with guest rooms resembling something out of a Ralph Lauren campaign. That translates to an elegant yet understated decor, a nice touch given the proximity of the rooms to the awesome oceanfront slips lined with all manner of impressive boats and yachts.

We dined at the Yacht Club’s Gulf Coast Kitchen restaurant, overlooking the wharf. It’s the kind of place that you lean over to the next table to ask to borrow the salt and find Billy Joel sitting there. During our stay we were not deprived at least one sighting of a reality housewife. It’s that type of place.

The servers were professional and kind and the bartender mixed up some signature cocktails that were perfect for the beachy atmosphere and warm, relaxing setting. The food was tasty and the whole scenario can’t be beat if you’re looking for a Hamptons-style lunch.

We didn’t expect a “yacht club” to be kid friendly, but surprisingly the staff was very accommodating to children, while the various pools at the hotel kept the kids smiling. They loved the private beach and the free paddle boats, kayaks, and beach cruisers. We spent one rainy morning swimming in the indoor pool, which we were happy to find just outside the hotel lobby. The property also has two heated outdoor pools, volleyball, horseshoes, and bocce ball. Additionally, there are four different restaurants on site, a full-service spa, salon, and fitness center and easy access to fishing and watersport

Our favorite amenity at the MYC was the heated deck complete with fire pits and an amazing view of the starlit sky. Our kids sat around one of the fire pits reminiscing about their fun day, while the adults enjoying a nightcap at the lounge a few feet away.

There is free shuttle service into town or to the train station. Sights and activities close by include the Montauk Lighthouse, Gosman’s Dock, Corey Wave Professional Surf Instruction, and golfing at Montauk Downs State Park.

Most of the accommodations overlook the ocean and harbor. Our guest room had a private courtyard with Adirondack chairs facing the water with a picture perfect view of the ocean. If you’re looking for a little peace and quiet, plus a good amount of privacy, then The Villas are for you. The Villas, which are separate from the main guest rooms, have exclusive tennis courts, pool, playground, and courtyard. Be careful though, you’ll feel so at home there you might forget it’s not your very own luxury estate.
