Palazzo Decumani

Nestled on a tiny piazza amid the blessed chaos that is Naples, Italy is a rare find … the Palazzo Decumani. The 4 star albergo takes its name from its heritage – a former palatial residence almost hidden within the narrow streets and alleys of the Decumani neighborhood, a beehive of activity day and night.  This unimposing palazzo is the perfect place to experience the effervescent sights and sounds of the centro storico round the clock and you can choose to be in the action or take a breather and escape it. In a destination this intense, you’ll appreciate tranquility for one or more moments every day and the hotel is an oasis in that respect. I could peer out from my suite’s French doors into one of the many alleyways adjoining the piazza and not hear a sound.

A charcoal gray awning adorns the simple entrance of the putty colored, 4 storied neoclassic structure with matching shutters. Offbeat mismatched topiaries anchor a few steps up leading into a gleaming lobby decorated with a large pair of mirrored obelisks perched on mirrored cubes.  It’s very Hollywood. Now catch that fabulous red and white Murano chandelier with huge red tassels hung through four full flights with a red chain which leads to an epic winding staircase out of a Hitchcock film. Don’t worry; you won’t need to climb its grand steps to reach your chambers, for the hotel has thoughtfully installed a nice sized elevator. This is a welcomed surprise for a building this compact. And the red theme is delicately carried out in the public spaces which are accented by glass urns and curios thoughtfully arranged in the reception. A serene lounge adjoins the lobby with oversized red velvet banquettes and original paintings by Stefania Sabatino.  Its soothing darkness is a wonderful retreat from the blistering summer heat and it’s great for happy hour, nicely laid out by the hotel with little canapés and nibbles.

Accommodations marry with the white marble floors and walls throughout the hotel.  The striking, interiors are done in light woods with custom furnishings accented by beige draperies with russet trim. Built-in cabinetry provides tons of storage space and a playful 2 toned velvet headboard is adorned with tassels.  An all-white marble bath decorated with a signed gelatin silver black and white photo has a nice sized tub with Duravit fixtures and optional hand-held shower.  But a nice surprise here – this old building has great plumbing and powerful water pressure. Linen towels, Etro amenities, plush quilted robes and thick black spa shoes complete the luxurious offerings.
