Prague Christmas Markets

One of the most magical things about the holiday season is the way that it completely takes over some of our cities. One of the best cities to visit during this time of year is Prague and its fabulous Christmas markets. Heralded as one of the finest Christmas markets in Europe, Prague transforms its fairy tale streets into a holiday wonderland. The markets are held annually in Old Town Square and Wencelas Square, two beautiful squares just a five minute walk from each other in the historic center of Prague.

Wander through a sea of ornately decorated wooden huts and you’ll discover an array of traditional Christmas goods ready and waiting for plunder. Some of the most exciting things are traditional handicrafts, glassware, jewelry, embroidered lace, wooden toys, metal ware, ceramics, scented candles, Christmas tree ornaments, hats, gloves and scarves as well as puppets and dolls dressed in traditional costumes. Many of the items will make great Christmas decorations and gifts and become cherished mementos of your time in the Czech Republic.

Grab a cup of hot mulled wine to wash down the many Czech foods you’ll be trying.

Prepare to be sidetracked for hours following your nose through the market to the numerous stands with prepared foods and sweet treats. The hams and sausages make a great lunch and if you have a sweet tooth, sample the fresh gingerbread or Tredelnik, a sugary pastry.

Besides shopping, there are plenty of other things to see and do at the markets. Petting zoos invite kids to make friends with sheep, goats, and donkeys and a varied musical program spans the entire period from the end of November through the beginning of January. Children’s choirs travel from all over the country to perform traditional Christmas hymns in Old Town Square.

The highlight of the Christmas markets is definitely the soaring Christmas tree in Old Town Square which is brought in from the Krkonose mountain region in the north. On November 29, you can catch the official lighting and the opening of the festivities.
