Vaginal Davis is a name synonymous with underground art and cultural innovation. Her work, which spans performance, visual art, music, and more, has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. The exhibition, which originated at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, is organized thematically and showcases Davis’s versatility and profound impact as a countercultural icon.

Visitors will be treated to a rich tapestry of Davis’s work, including major installations, video, paintings, zines, audio works, sculptures, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Archival materials trace her early career in Los Angeles during the 1980s and ’90s, highlighting her foundational role in the city’s queercore scene. Davis’s innovative spirit shines through in early videos, photographs, and ephemera, capturing her unique position at the nexus of punk and queer worlds.

Immersive Experiences

One of the exhibition’s highlights is the installation “HAG – small, contemporary, haggard,” a tribute to the gallery Davis ran from her Sunset Boulevard apartment. Visitors can immerse themselves in the recreated gallery, featuring sculptures, portraits painted with discount makeup, and a wallpaper evoking “lesbian domesticity.” Each element invites attendees to explore Davis’s artistic universe and her playful yet pointed critique of societal norms.

The exhibition also delves into Davis’s literary contributions with “HOFPFISTEREI,” an interactive installation showcasing her zines, poetry, and columns. Guests can engage with Davis’s writing and even create their own editorial projects to take home, making the experience both educational and participatory.

“Vaginal Davis: Magnificent Product” also highlights Davis’s enduring collaborations with influential artists and collectives. From new multimedia installations to dystopian video projects, the exhibition underscores her ability to blend aesthetics with political commentary. These collaborations bring a fresh perspective to Davis’s work, offering visitors a comprehensive view of her artistic journey.
