Why visit Rome in the winter?
You mean besides the food, the fashion, the world class opera and expositions taking place in the city’s museums and palazzos besides what is already fascinating like the Pantheon, the Colisseum and the Spanish Steps?
Well for starters, there are fewer tourists for sightseeing and that means no lines or crowds! So, you’ll get to enjoy Rome as the Romans do, without hoards of foreigners. Also, hotel prices are lower off season and more than ever this year you’ll find great bargains in the shops and boutiques – Christmas is coming soon!
With Rome’s season in full swing, there are many exhibits and performances to check out. For example, Robert Doisneau’s photography series, Paris en liberté, is showing through February 3, 2013. Doisneau is one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century and this exhibit showcases over 200 striking black and white prints of gardens, streets, the Seine and of course, fashionable Parisians. Also on exhibit is “Akbar-The Great Emperor of India” at the Museo del Corso, also through Feb. 3. And on view until January 27 at Ara Pacis, is a colorful exhibit of illustrations by Benito Jacovitti, a comic artist, who worked on various cultural and political magazines in Italy for over 60 years. These exhibits are a great way to spend the afternoon after taking in the wondrous Sistine Chapel in the morning and strolling through Vatican City.
But our favorite hotel group in Rome has upped the ante and put together a simple way to see these and more as part of The Bettoja Hotels “Arts and Culture” package which offers an insider’s view of the famous Scudiere del Quirnale art gallery. Their exhibition of Vermeer “The Gold Century of Dutch Art” until January 20th includes carefully selected paintings by this famed artist and other works by his Dutch contemporaries. This show will be followed by “Tiziano”, from February through June, an exhibition of the famous 16th century Venetian painter, Titan. Other goodies in their two night package are: a free dinner at La Terrazza, the rooftop restaurant at the Hotel Mediterraneo or at the renowned Massimo d’Azeglio restaurant along with free access to the fitness center at the Hotel Nord or the Mediterraneo.
All the Bettoja Hotels are located close to Rome’s monuments and attractions and this package is a perfect combination of classic culture and new twists to enhance the traditional Roman holiday.
