Enter BAR HENRY and for a moment you may feel like you’ve stepped back in time. As we settled into our plush red velvet chairs that were rescued from the Plaza Hotel’s recent expansive renovation, I felt like I’d discovered a New York secret. A quick glance at the long, narrow, subterranean landmark space revealed the tell tale signs of a bygone speakeasy except today it’s alive with a fresh, new spirit. Bar Henry will dazzle you with its energy which no doubt was inherited from those frenzied speakeasy patrons.
Everything is pumped to please from the extensive wine list that is customized as per your request (a selection of over 100 full bottles can be ordered by the half bottle) to the incredibly sensitive service and exquisitely prepared gastropub cuisine. A gleaming, polished copper ceiling, exposed brick walls, soft lighting and smoky mirrors bring a quiet drama to this downtown haunt that definitely has its finger on the pulse of pleasing its clientele. It’s the perfect after hours hang out and you can satisfy your hunger too.
Opened in November of 2009, Bar Henry’s menu is easily translated. In short, order everything! Start with some of their Bar D’Oeurvres like Ceviche, Jamon Serano or Boquerones. Follow with some of our favorites on the appetizer menu like Short Rib Corn Taco, Panko Fried Oysters, or the Blini and Caviar. Main Dishes were Grilled Pork Chop, Roast Organic Chicken or Hamburger Henry and we couldn’t help but continue a course of recklessness by ordering the Moscato di Asti with everything. It’s an especially nice accompaniment to the house made Apple Tarte Tartin and Chocolate Mousse for a finale that’ll send you and your guests out into the night on a cloud.
Come hungry but take our word and be more sensible by savoring the fabulous wines with each dish. Bar Henry is “the last legal cellar in Manhattan” so look for the neon sign on West Houston and head down the stairs and discover a wine bar with bistro charms.
