Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Perhaps there is something more to breakfast that just proper nutrition, however. No wonder then that different cultures around the world interpret this meal differently, from “smorgas” in Scandinavia to banh mi in Vietnam.
TheDailyMeal.com and its’ editor Nicole Campoy-Leffler are currently sharing some localized global breakfasts in a stunning slide show pictorial with commentary. I bet you will discover at least one dish that will surprise you! How about the “mandazi”, a sweet, flat donut, served with sweetened, milky chai in Kenya? Or the thick, sweetened “sugarbread” eaten in the morning in Ghana with a cup of tea?
Travel a little further north to Egypt and you’ll be enjoying “t’aamiyya,” a sandwich with falafel or a dish cooked with fava beans in olive oil and lemon juice. Not exactly milk and cereal, right?
The meal gets more filling and savory as you head to the Far East. In Vietnam, breakfast usually begins with a steaming bowl of pho or a banh mi. In Japan, you’ll get steamed rice paired with miso soup, broiled or grilled fish, a rolled omelet, and dried seaweed with green tea for your first meal. In Indonesia, a “lontong sayur,” which is compressed rice with a spicy curry sauce and vegetables is the breakfast of champions.
