Elvis’ Graceland Memphis

It’s been 35 years since the King of Rock n’ Roll left us but the legacy of Elvis Presley prevails. To commemorate this anniversary year, three new exhibits exploring his career, family, and impact on the world will be opening at Graceland, his iconic estate in Memphis, Tennessee.

Since 1982, Graceland Mansion, the home of Elvis and his family for twenty years, has welcomed thousands of visitors who want to see how he lived his life out of the spotlight. In 1991 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2006 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Unlike most rock musicians, Elvis’s pad is not trashed! Guests are welcomed to take a peek at the King’s luxurious, one-of-a-kind rooms such as the Jungle Room, a lounge resembling a jungle that is meticulously decorated with green carpet, brown leather furniture, plants and stuffed animals. Other fan favorites are the dining room with a crystal chandelier and gold accented furniture, the pristine piano room, and the TV lounge where Elvis installed three televisions and would simultaneously watch each one.

Elvis lived like a king, and every year people come from all over the world to celebrate the man who created a little thing called rock n’ roll.

The first new exhibit will open in conjunction with his birthday on January 5th, 2012. Entitled “Elvis on Tour,” it celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Golden Globe award-winning documentary of the same name. The documentary takes an in-depth look at Elvis’s multi-city tour during April of 1972 and includes portions of an interview he gave regarding his life and career. Artifacts from the exhibit include the producer’s Golden Globe award, jewelry and stage clothing worn during the concerts, rarely seen photos, videos, and more.

Visitors will soon be able to experience a new perspective of Elvis through the eyes of a young girl who knew him best. The second new exhibit, “Elvis…Through His Daughter’s Eyes” will open on February 1st, the birthday of his only child, Lisa Marie Presley. Lisa Marie was personally involved in the exhibit’s development and planning. Highlights include numerous items including family photos and home movies, her baby footprints, childhood tricycle, record player, and crib, among others. This exhibit is part of the Graceland VIP Tour.

Whether you’re strutting your stuff in a rhinestone studded jumpsuit or dancing along to “Jailhouse Rock,” there’s no doubt that Elvis was one of the most influential musicians ever. The third new exhibit at Graceland, “Icon: The Influence of Elvis Presley” will open on March 1st and will feature the collections of big-name entertainers who’ve listed Elvis as one of their inspirations. Items on display include Sammy Hagar’s Red Rocker custom Yamaha guitar, Bono’s “MacPhisto” suit and one of Bill Clinton’s saxophones. Kevin Kern, spokesman for Elvis Presley Enterprises, states that this exhibit is ultimately an “example of other artists paying tribute” to someone who “broke a lot of barriers” and created a whole new style of music.
