Just two hours outside of New York City at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, a country home awaits. Set in an 18th-century Dutch Colonial mansion in the charming hamlet of Stone Ridge, Hasbrouck House offers an idyllic escape from everyday life. A standout among Hudson Valley boutique hotels, Hasbrouck House was named “America’s Most Romantic Retreat” by the World Boutique Hotel Awards.
Built by the wealthy Hasbrouck family in 1757 as a country escape from bustling New Paltz village, this Hudson Valley boutique property has experienced many transformations. Most recently a painstaking renovation completed in 2016 expertly combined the best of the home’s historic features with modern amenities.
Superb Accommodations
The exterior of Hasbrouck House features stunning stonework. Inside, a thoughtfully designed portfolio of rooms, lofts and suites are located within three historic properties: the main house, the Stable House and the Carriage House. For guests requiring more space, The Cottage provides three charming bedrooms in a private house. Soft grays and blues dominate the decorative palette and red Persian rugs on reclaimed hardwood floors add the perfect pop of color. Blending historic features like painted wainscoting and tin ceilings with modern conveniences including heated flooring, sound systems, and Wi-Fi hotspots gives the Hasbrouck House a unique ambience. Additional amenities include Aesop toiletries, iHome docking stations, in-room Nespresso machines and Frette linens.
High leather bed frames are a dramatic touch while comfy down pillows and duvets add to the many excuses for unleashing your inner snuggler for some serious down time. Rooms with stand-alone tubs and cozy fireplaces are a must for a romantic getaway—even if you’re only romancing a good book!
Should you care to leave your quarters, a downstairs Club Room provides a cozy spot for hanging out with friends and family. Work on your pool game at the billiards table or relax by a roaring fire with a hand-crafted cocktail. In warmer months, outside gardens and patios provide more opportunities to enjoy the surroundings.
From the Garden and the Smokehouse to the Table
Located in the lower level of the main house, Butterfield serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday along with a weekend brunch. Through locally sourced seasonal cuisine, Executive Chef Jesse Frederick pays tribute to the Hudson Valley region which original settlers deemed “as rich as butter “and as a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, he expertly blends sustainability with classical techniques.
Restored in the recent renovation, the property’s original smokehouse enhances the flavor of locally sourced meats while the bounty of fresh vegetables sourced from neighboring farms will win over the pickiest vegan guest. The inventive pilsner battered cauliflower on the appetizer menu was delightful and the house-smoked short ribs irresistibly tender and flavorful. And even if you’re dieting, don’t skip the fresh-baked bread.
Luxury Wellness Experiences
Hasbrouck House partners with local professionals to offer yoga instruction and massages. Available by appointment, wellness services take place in your room or the onsite private wellness room. A partnership with RidgeWell Fitness provides guests access to the local fitness center as well as fitness classes.
A Destination for Every Season
History and nature connect on the 55 acres surrounding the hotel. An expansive lawn, private lake and hiking trails provide ample opportunities for enjoying the seasons. Summer brings BBQs on the lawn through a partnership with Atticus Farms along with time to enjoy the historic 1920s pool. Wander along the walking trails to marvel at fall foliage and stop by neighboring orchards for apple picking. In winter, spend an afternoon ice skating on the pond or take on the trails with snowshoes that are available for guests. Nightly bonfires happen year-round so get the marshmallows ready for roasting.
Neighbors You’ll Want to Know
While there’s plenty to do onsite, don’t miss the chance to explore neighboring communities. Pop into the Phoenicia Diner, a favorite dating back to the 1980s which offers a traditional menu enhanced by local flavors.
Outdoor enthusiasts are spoiled for choice with hiking trails at nearby Minnewaska State Park and throughout the Catskills. In winter, many of the trails are available for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
With the Hudson River School of Art founded by Thomas Cole in nearby Greene County, art has played a leading role in the Hudson Valley for centuries. Art galleries are abundant both in Stone Ridge along and the neighboring villages. History buffs will relish the museums here. And, if antiquing is your thing, get ready to max out your credit card.
When the day is done, return “home” to the Hasbrouck House. You may want to drop by the front desk to see if you can stay another day or two!
