Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Exhibit
Believe it or not, there’s just too much weirdness going on in the San Francisco Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum. So much in fact, that the weirdness is spreading into the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, capitalizing on the Guinness Book of World Records’ largest atrium lobby. But what will be featured in this 42,000 square foot atrium of abnormalities? No, not a life-size candy statue of Lady Gaga or the world’s largest sea lion (those are back at the museum). The special Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! exhibit will set aside its overbearingly weird tendencies to showcase several extraordinary San Francisco-influenced displays.
From April 9 to June 30, the hotel will be home to special constructed artifacts that used the City as its muse. The unusual exhibit items include a toothpick model of the Golden Gate Bridge, a matchbook model of San Francisco’s iconic cable car, and wire sculptures of two of the City’s most prominent musicians. The amount of meticulous craftsmanship invested in each piece grants them the privilege of being showcased under the notorious Ripley’s title. The toothpick Golden Gate Bridge was constructed out of 30,000 toothpicks, and is on display just in time for the bridge’s 75th anniversary. The authentically detailed eight-foot long Matchstick Cable Car is modeled to scale, complete with moving parts. The exhibit “Wired for Sound” features three-dimensional portraits of rock and roll royalty Jerry Garcia and Carlos Santana, composed of miles and miles of twisted chicken wire.
The exhibit is one of the Hyatt Culture Club’s monthly exhibits that support the community and also create an educational forum. The Hyatt Culture Club is a series of partnerships of local corporations aspiring to feature the assets of the hotel’s partners while providing visitors with an insider’s view to the city-by-the-bay. The Hyatt Regency has hosted several other lobby displays and interactive exhibits, including those from the Jelly Belly Candy Company, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
