The town of Oia on the Greek island of Santorini is the new kid on the block. A beautifully scenic 20 minute drive north from Fira, the capital of the island and the major draw, it’s the Malibu to Fira’s Beverly Hills. Smaller and more discreet, it’s the flip side of Fira’s audacious personality, that is, Kathy not Patty (Duke, that is).
Take the Katakies Hotel for example. Carved into the mountainside and descending to an infinity pool that’s a travel magazine cover shot if ever I’ve seen one, it exudes a kind of Zen sensuality. The breathtaking view from the pool out to sea and the Caldera (a volcanic rim) can be shared only by the eighteen privileged guests that this pool accommodates. An army of staff clad in white are at the ready on all three levels of the hotel where large wooden chaises cushioned in white with perfectly folded white towels invite you to sit and savor that view. Plus, there’s another pool as well as a sunbathing deck with Jacuzzi should you need a little variety. Such is the level of luxury here at the only Leading Small Hotel on the island.
Everything about Katakies is a seamless integration of modern Greek design and the natural geography of the land. Except for the perfectly painted steps and landings in a dense gunmetal grey (touched up daily we’ve heard), the entire environment is a study in white. Only the blue expanse breaks the blinding spell. The impeccably appointed guest rooms and suites are cove like with classic arched ceilings and, of course, those majestic views.
This hotel is tucked away, providing a secluded and romantic experience. With a strict no children policy, Katakies is a favorite for couples and honeymooners seeking a little privacy. For those who can’t tear themselves away from the serenity, the hotel also offers massage, a wine tasting at sunset, and the Kirini Pool restaurant with a fresh, seasonal Mediterranean menu. For exploring the island’s assets, there are shuttles from the hotel to the glorious, rugged beaches. And most importantly, when the throngs of people march to the town’s most westerly tip for the splendour of Oia’s sunset, you’ll be perched steps away viewing it in private sipping a glass of Santorini’s luscious Assyrtiko wine.
