If you’ve been to London before, you’ve probably seen such iconic sites as Big Ben or the Gherkin. However, with the new attention London received for the 2012 Olympics, these new attractions are making visitors even more excited.
The first of these is the ArcelorMittal Orbit. It towers 115 meters over the Olympic Park, now the tallest piece of public art. Costing a paltry £15.00 to enter, the Orbit has two observation platforms in its red and silver spirals that overlook all of London. The structure has 250 colored spot lights that make East London pop with both static and animated effects every night in a fifteen minute light show.
You might be familiar with the O2 which was erected in 2007. It’s an entertainment center that’s hosted some of the biggest pop stars performing in London. It has seen performances by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lady Gaga, however, it just recently introduced a new element. For just £22.00, the O2 has a guided tour over a walkway on the roof of the structure. It is a 90 minute tour with a 360 degree viewing platform in the middle. All of London can be seen from this platform.
While it wasn’t originally scheduled to be open in time for the Olympics, the Emirates Air Line was able to get up and running. The Air Line is a cable car that travels from the O2/North Greenwich Area to the Royal Docks. It travels 1.1 km at a height of 90 metres, and can transport 2500 people per hour across the Thames. A five minute ride costs £3.00 and offers a terrific view over the Thames.
London is such a popular tourist destination with a plethora of museums and pubs waiting for its visitors. But for everyone visiting in the coming months they’ll find several new attractions ready and waiting to dazzle them.
