Midsummer Travel Plans

A few months ago, summer seemed so distant. July was an empty playground to be filled with hikes, sailing on the lake, driving with the top down and barbeques with all your friends. But sneaky June has come and gone, leaving you in panic mode. Where did the time go? You were supposed to be at the beach, not tending to bug bites and too afraid to leave your air-conditioned living room. It’s time to get off the couch and make the most of what’s left. Luckily, you’re not alone. Here’s our guide to midsummer mini-trips that require no more than impromptu planning.

If You’re in the Northeast

Unless you’re lucky enough to live near the Atlantic coast, most of us Northeasterners consider the ocean to be a distant glimmer somewhere towards the Caribbean. That’s because we forget that great beaches don’t necessarily require palm trees. Next time you’re in the mood for some surf, sand, and luxury living, break out those salmon khakis and catch the boat from Hyannisport to New England’s favorite island, Nantucket. Stay at the White Elephant, where on weekends you’re likely to see more than one (very glamorous) wedding.

If You’re in the Southeast

In the span of a generation, Miami Beach has transformed from a home for retirees to the cultural capital of the South, which makes it a perfect getaway for more than just sun and fun. Who has time to worry about frizzy hair and sweaty skin when nightclub basses are bumping through the streets and beautiful beaches await? For astonishing views of summer sunsets and chic modern furnishings, stay at the Hotel Beaux Arts, located in the trendy Brickell corridor of downtown Miami.

If You’re in the Midwest

Slow down with a country vacation on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. You’ll spend your days fishing, swimming, and listening to the tranquil sounds of chirping birds. But if you like your vacations a little more cushy, try Camden on the Lake Resort, Spa, and Yacht Club. Dine at dockside restaurants for unforgettable views of the setting sun.

If You’re in the Southwest

Beat the heat and head to one of the many (air-conditioned) resorts in Las Vegas. Since it’s not peak tourist season, you’re likely to find great last-minute deals on hotel rooms and airfare or save even more by taking a road trip. Instead of sweating outside in the desert sun, you can be winning big with celebrities in America’s most riotous city. On the Strip the Cosmopolitan Hotel is your best bet not only due to its ultra-sophisticated atmosphere but also because of its laundry list of top-notch amenities.

If You’re in the Northwest

Between Seattle and Vancouver lies an archipelago of more than 450 tiny islands, perfect for a nature-loving Northwesterner’s  weekend getaway. On the 45-minute ferry to the San Juan Islands, you’re almost guaranteed to spot orca whales not to mention gorgeous Pacific Coast scenery. We recommend staying at Pebble Cove Farm, a homey cottage that’s fun for kids and makes a true commitment to being green.
