My City: New York with Kelly Sheerins

Fall is finally here and it’s the start of the new season in New York City. This is when new is in the air, new gallery openings, concerts and dance performances, new shows opening on and off-Broadway and a new you getting back to your routine (which includes Soul Cycle classes as the skinny squire knows).

So, we sat down with our favorite Soul Cycle instructor Kelly Sheerins.

Kelly is a Senior Instructor in New York City, a former Radio City Rockette who has been teaching fitness here for the past ten years. She’s passionate about creating a class environment where her students leave feeling mentally and physically empowered. She currently lives in The Big Apple with her husband Greg and dog Penny.

So, who better to talk about New York and the season than Kelly?

What inspires you in New York City?

The hustle. I don’t know anyone that moves to here to sit back and relax. The people who live in New York work hard and dream big. I am constantly inspired to continue to learn and evolve as a person here.

What is your favorite fall activity in the city?

Farmers markets! I love to walk around, sip some apple cider, look in the tents displaying mums and pumpkins, and then go relax on a park bench while taking in the stunning fall foliage.

How do you keep fit in your city?

I’m lucky to have a job that keeps me in pretty good shape 😉 I also love to walk around the city whenever I can.

What do you do differently as the weather gets colder?

I spend more time reading and writing indoors. I will also stretch and practice yoga in heated rooms throughout the winter to help keep my muscles happy.

What is your favorite thing to do outdoors in the city?

I love going to Central Park. It’s the only place in the city where I feel I can truly be surrounded by nature.

What is your favorite monument?

I have a soft spot for the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park.

What is your favorite museum?

The Met

What is your favorite neighborhood?

The West Village

What is your favorite healthy restaurant?

I’m going to say any good sushi restaurant because when I want to eat healthy, I usually stay in and eat whatever my husband cooks, lol.

What is your splurge (off your normal regime) restaurant?

I don’t eat a lot of red meat, but when I crave a burger, I run to JG Melon (the original one on 74th street).

Where do you like to go on a Saturday?

I tend to see a lot of concerts in the fall. There are always so many great artists touring during October and November so I would have to say seeing live music with friends would be a perfect Saturday night.

Are there any secret things you love to do in New York City now?

For me, the shift to fall always feels big and exciting. I like to make a trip to one of my favorite crystal shops before the season and get some new stones and sage to help clear out the old and welcome the new.

What can you find in New York City that you can’t find anywhere else?

That is a good question. Perhaps the fastest walking humans?

What would constitute a “perfect” fall day for you?

Sweater weather, a large farmers market, good cider, a trip to the bookstore, a stroll through Central Park, some homemade butternut squash soup and a hangout with friends by a fire.

What is your best memory of something that has happened to you in New York City?

Another tough but good question! I’ve lived in NYC for over ten years and have had moments where I loved it so much it hurts and others when I wished I lived anywhere else. There are too many incredible memories to narrow it down to just one, but what comes to mind are those rare moments that happen on days when I take a second to slow down, look up and just breathe. I remember that somehow, I managed to make this intense, wild, overwhelming concrete jungle my home and I feel really proud.
