Toronto is a fascinating destination, a hybrid city that is Canada’s most visited destination. It’s a center of big-ticket events and attractions, top notch restaurants, music, architecture, culture, festivals and pro sports including the Toronto Blue Jays.
We chatted with artist and resident Lisa Graziotto, a born and bred Canadian, whose love affair with “The Big Smoke” began when she enrolled in a fine arts program there. Lisa carried her crayons everywhere as a kid and drew on almost everything. She has been inspired by the many books she’s acquired over the years and her travels have been a major source of creativity.
Let’s hear her thoughts on her chosen hometown.
Where do you like to go on Saturday night?
In the summer months, I like to walk around Queen Street West, grabbing a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants. Then I’ll head off to a patio for drinks. In the winter, I grab my skates and go to the Natrel Rink at Harborfront for some exercise, followed by a local brew at the Amsterdam Brewery.
What is your favorite museum?
The Art Gallery of Ontario.
What is your favorite monument in the city?
Ireland Park. It’s dedicated to the Irish famine refugees.
Are there any secret things that you love to do in your city?
Sometimes I like to go to one of the big cemeteries in the city. The Necropolis is one of my favorites; it’s a place to think, sketch or photograph.
What is different about your city?
We have an island where there are lovely, old cottage-like homes, beaches, an artists’ retreat, and a nude beach. Spending time on Toronto Island is like traveling far away but it’s really just a short ferry ride away.
What can you find in your city that you can’t find anywhere else?
Many ethnic neighborhoods where you can find amazing food (one can’t create without nourishment)! Some of my favorites are Little Ethiopia, Chinatown, Greektown, Little India and Little Italy.
What is your favorite neighborhood?
Queen Street West. It has a good concentration of galleries, art stores, and alternative coffee shops.
What inspires you in your city?
The many green spaces we’re fortunate to have scattered around town.
Is your city a good place to be a creative person?
I feel that Toronto has plenty to offer the creative person. Lively neighborhoods with multicultural vibes are a source of inspiration. And there are plenty of bars offering a wide range of nightlife for celebrating a successful, creative day in the studio. There are also many beautiful green spaces to contemplate your next project.
