The Secret’s Out

Situated directly across from La Jolla Cove in the tony town of La Jolla is the Pantai Inn, completely renovated to perfection in every detail. A collection of cottages and buildings – all different and special, but under one ownership – this top-notch, family-owned inn with 30 rooms (20 suites and 10 cottages) opened its doors six years ago at the intersection of Coast Street and Ocean Boulevard.

Comfortable and Inviting

I admit that the first time I heard of the Inn was not long ago even though I’m local in the area. Inconspicuous, it’s nothing like its nearby, high-profile neighbor – La Jolla’s pink regal queen “La Valencia.” I’d driven past Pantai numerous times without even a notice as it blends effortlessly into its Mediterranean-like surroundings. From a cozy rattan lounger on my beach cottage balcony (#208, unofficially the best room in the house) I watched the daily activities of the town’s residents – folks walking their dogs, strolling with kids, going for a jog. It was comfortable and inviting, one of those rare lodging experiences into which you simply meld.

Should you find yourself in the San Diego vicinity, just look for a grouping of low-rises in the color goldenrod across from the Pacific Ocean. The entrance’s cascading water over large rocks and onto delicate black pebbles should tip you off also. The intimate property, one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, reflects an Indonesian theme in both décor and hospitality with reminders of Bali at every turn. A greeting on an intricately-carved wooden plaque above the reception door, “Dumogi Rahajeng Lan Bagia,” translates to “Have a good day.” Serenity inducing and refined, among the enhancements on-site are rare wooden carvings, marble statuettes, heirloom paintings, wild orchids and hibiscus.

A Bit of a Backstory

When German bootmaker, Max Heimburge, left his country prior to WWI to settle in America (and eventually San Diego), he set in motion a family business. After opening a successful chain of shoe stores, Universal Boots, he began purchasing real estate in La Jolla, eventually acquiring properties ranging from seaside cottages to Art Deco buildings of the 1930s. Serving over the years as individual apartments and for a time a motel, the Pantai Inn today is operated by the family’s third generation, Heimburge’s grandchildren Laurie Durisoe and Larry Jackman.

Signature details include an outdoor firepit and lush courtyard. Amenities such as housekeeping twice daily, complimentary tea and coffee service round the clock and a full breakfast complete with double-chocolate scones make for a memorable stay. And of course, La Jolla’s lively village scene along Prospect Street and Girard Avenue are steps away should you want to explore.
