This autumn, the National Portrait Gallery in London invites you to explore the captivating realm of Cecil Beaton, the legendary photographer known as the “King of Vogue.” Opening on October 9, 2025, “Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World” marks the first major exhibition dedicated solely to Beaton’s groundbreaking contributions to fashion photography.

A Pioneering Photographer:

Cecil Beaton’s work transcends mere photography, capturing the essence of glamour and style that defined the 20th century. Renowned for his evocative portraits of Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, as well as British royalty such as Queen Elizabeth II, Beaton elevated fashion photography to an art form. His ability to blend Edwardian stage glamour with modern elegance revolutionized the industry and left an indelible mark on the worlds of fashion and art.

Curator’s Vision:
Curated by Robin Muir, a photographic historian and Vogue contributing editor, the exhibition is meticulously designed to showcase Beaton’s artistic journey. Muir’s vision for the exhibition is to highlight Beaton’s ability to capture the zeitgeist of various eras through his lens, bringing to life the personas and atmospheres of the subjects he photographed. By focusing on Beaton’s unique style—a fusion of surrealism, modernism, and English elegance—Muir seeks to provide visitors with a deep understanding of how Beaton’s work influenced the visual language of fashion photography. The exhibition is interwoven with themes that trace Beaton’s rise from a young photographer experimenting with his first camera to a celebrated icon in the world of art and fashion.

A Journey Through Time:
The exhibition features around 250 items, including photographs, sketches, and costumes. Visitors will journey through Beaton’s illustrious career, from his early experiments with photography in Edwardian England to his innovative work during the interwar and post-war periods. Highlights include his vivid color photographs from the 1950s and his iconic costume designs for “My Fair Lady.”

Interactive and Immersive Experience:
Through several interwoven themes, the exhibition delves into Beaton’s artistic evolution, showcasing his role as a fashion illustrator, Oscar-winning costume designer, and social caricaturist. A self-taught genius, Beaton’s unique style combined elements of European surrealism and American modernism, all filtered through his distinct English sensibility.
