A break does the body good. With this interminable year churning ahead at a glacial pace, I craved an escape from New York City. It turns out a destination-staycation in nearby Nyack was just the reset I needed.
About 30 miles north of Manhattan, the village of Nyack sits right on the Hudson River and blends the charm of a small town with the convenience of a city suburb.
Sleeping in Style
Not wanting to completely forgo my urban inclinations, I checked into The Time Nyack. The upscale, boutique hotel is infusing this sweet town with a sultry city flair. With loft-style rooms and a lush design, The Time Nyack is bringing sexy back to the suburbs.
Housed in a former factory, the hotel honors its history while creating a completely modern experience. Exposed eleven-foot ceilings and huge windows (many with Hudson River views), frame rooms that pop with colorful curtains, funky furniture and scarlet skull-emblazoned rugs, which you’ll want to steal for your home. Don’t! They look really good under the hotel beds. The wallpaper is trippy and hypnotic and resembles an artistic interpretation of a Rorschach test. And the results are in: a good night lies ahead at The Time Nyack.
Beyond your room, explore the shared spaces, expansive enough to be social-distance friendly. Extending from the lobby are semi-private seating areas with brown leather tufted couches, and tables and chairs upholstered in bright colors. Bring your laptop to work in the lounge (there is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel), chill out on a comfy couch or sip cocktails at the hotel bar (still open and following appropriate Covid guidelines).
In warmer months, don’t forget your bathing suit. The Time Nyack has a gorgeous heated outdoor pool and bar. Warm up lounging under the sun, refresh with a signature cocktail and make a day of it by enjoying a poolside meal.
Dinner and Cocktails
Any time of the year, The Grille serves up Modern American Fusion, catering to your diverse dietary desires. And don’t neglect the cocktail menu. It will keep you warm in the winter, cool in the summer and gleefully spirited year-round.
Less than an hour from New York City, Nyack is a small town with a big heart. It’s home to art galleries, quaint shops, hiking trails and a bicycle path that connects along the Hudson to the paths in Manhattan. With modern art displays throughout the lobby, industrial-inspired designs and upscale dining and nightlife, The Time Nyack is an easy city escape for a much-needed recharge.
