We all have the best intentions leading up to the New Year, making resolutions and planning to keep them. But sadly for most (a whopping 92%), those resolutions will be broken come end of January. I say if they’re going to be broken, why not break them in style?
Three standard resolutions might be eating healthier, drinking less and saving more money. If these are one of yours, here are the best places in the USA to break them—when you’re ready, of course.
RESOLUTION BREAKER #1: How to NOT Eat Healthier
If you want a break from your diet, head to the Southeastern USA and put some south in your mouth. I look forward to my visits back home to indulge in biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, fried chicken and all the fixins – like fried green tomatoes. Yum!
You can find Southern indulgences across the region, but Charleston is one of the tastiest destinations. Lines snake around the block to get into Jestine’s downtown on Meeting Street. On the menu you’ll find sweet chicken and lima beans, sausage gumbo, shrimp and grits, meatloaf, pecan fried chicken and catfish. Sandwich selections include a BLT with fried green tomatoes and a true southern choice: peanut butter and banana. The beverage menu includes classics like YooHoo, RC Cola, Cheerwine and Jestine’s “Table Wine” a/k/a sweet tea. Save room for dessert because Jestine’s Sweet Shop has daily specials you won’t want to miss—it’s a slice of pie heaven.
RESOLUTION BREAKER #2: How to NOT Drink Less
When you’re ready to break your “drink less” New Year’s resolution, head to New Orleans. You’ll succeed. This party city’s bars are open 24 hours and you’ll find people in them all night and all day. On Bourbon Street (ground zero for booze consumption) you can indulge in New Orleans originals like the Hurricane and Shark Attack along with an assortment of frozen daiquiri flavors like nothing you’ve ever seen. New Orleans even has a drive-thru daiquiri stand if you want your libation on the run. Order from the rainbow of flavors like Jungle Juice, Strawberry Colada and the tempting (albeit frightening) Suicide.
If you need a reprieve from the party on Bourbon Street, check out the Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone. The Carousel Piano Bar and Lounge was installed in 1949 and has the only revolving bar in New Orleans. The 25-seat circular bar makes a single revolution every 15 minutes. Take a seat and order one of the house specials: Ramos Fizz, Sazerac or Vieux Carré. If you can’t decide, order all three—after all, you’re in New Orleans.
Legend has it the original bar stools had no backs. The ladies would take a seat while the gentlemen took seats at surrounding tables to ogle them from behind. As my lovely tour guide, Mary, so eloquently stated, “It was a Lazy Susan of sex.”

RESOLUTION BREAKER #3: How to NOT Save Money
Fastest way to empty your wallet? Las Vegas. Choose from an array of glittering resorts, world class entertainment with headliner acts, an overload of shopping and non-stop nightlife. Add golf and spa options to those and you’ll have more than enough places to part with your cash.
