Après Ski at 39 Degrees Lounge

It is no wonder that the term used to describe, “after skiing shenanigans” is French.  Après ski has become a universal term originating from the European concept of bringing an end to an epic day of skiing with some drinks, dancing and socializing.  Austria has particularly cultivated the art of après ski in its cozy Alpine villages where skiers dance tabletop in their ski boots.   When traveling to the Alps, foreigners shouldn’t be shocked if after a few schnapps they find themselves singing German folk songs and dancing with the locals.  On this side of the pond, there are a few après ski spots where one can find an equally vibrant scene.  In the Colorado Rockies for example, Aspen’s 39 Degrees Lounge, is arguably one of the hottest ones.

With an international reputation as one of the top 10 après ski scenes in the world, this destination lounge lives up to its expectations.  It’s a place that is always happening and won’t disappoint even the most jaded skiers and snowboarders who’ve shushed Europe’s most formidable slopes. The ski in, ski out bar and restaurant delights everyone who makes their entrance directly off the piste to the outside fire pit for s’mores.  Après ski at 39 Degrees lounge begins around 3pm while the sun is still shining and the beautiful people begin to flock to the heated outdoor pool and hot tub to soothe their muscles and flaunt their fit bodies.  Appropriately, the place proclaims itself as a place to see and be seen and is a Mecca for jet setting partygoers.

But it’s much more than a chic mountain tavern with gorgeous people.   The lounge has a full menu with celebrated items like the Roasted Mushroom Sliders with roasted tomato, caramelized onion, sautéed chard and Brie cheese.  Après ski literally never tasted this good (or gourmet).  Executive Chef Shawn Lawrence offers an eclectic list of specialties including Tuna Wonton Tacos, Sizzling Shrimp Risotto and house made Giant Pretzels with assorted mustards.  Not only will the food impress, the cocktail list is just as exciting.  Guests should try the Champagne Supernova with Moet & Chandon Imperial, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Fragoli Wild Strawberry Liqueur and White Peach Puree.

Located in the Sky Hotel at the base of Aspen Mountain in the heart of this posh skiers’ paradise, the lounge is open daily even to patrons who are not staying at the hotel.  From the exterior, the hotel itself is reminiscent of a 1970’s alpine lodge, and the whimsically chic interior has recently undergone phase one of renovations.  Summer 2012 will mark the re-opening of the property with a revamped and updated look.  The inspiration will remain true to the youthful energy that sets this hotel apart from other more conservative Aspen lodging.
